The Code Geass franchise got its main visual, cast and expanded staff for its new anime, “Code Geass: Star Chaser Aspal” (Hoshi Oi no Aspal), on Thursday (5). The reveal came from Bandai Namco Filmworks, which also confirmed advance preview screenings in five major Japanese cities in January 2027, ahead of a limited run of event screenings for the general public later in the year.

According to the company, the anime is set to premiere in 2027 and brings together well-known industry names. The story unfolds in the year 606 of the Kōreki calendar, as citizens of the Roman Empire endure the tyrannical rule of Emperor Fokasu and a succession of wars with neighboring nations. That is where Aspal, a young enslaved person living in the imperial city of Neapolis, meets a mysterious woman reduced to a disembodied head. The encounter between Aspal and Zoe marks the beginning of a new tale.

Main cast and characters

The visual and cast confirm two names at the heart of the story. Ivan Shibata voices Aspal, the enslaved protagonist who lives in the imperial city, while Hibiku Yamamura plays Zoe, the enigmatic woman whose body has vanished and who appears only as a floating head.

Bandai Namco Filmworks also revealed a visual for the Agarmatha named Chronos, one of the mechanical units expected to feature prominently in the production.

Japan previews and a 2027 premiere

Before the premiere, “Star Chaser Aspal” will hold advance preview screenings in five major Japanese cities in January 2027. A limited run of event screenings for the general public is set to follow later in the year. The production is scheduled for 2027, with a firm date still to be announced.

A franchise in expansion

The announcement reinforces a period of expansion for Code Geass. In December 2024, the franchise confirmed it had several “new works in production.” The original series premiered in 2006, followed by a sequel in 2008, and spawned manga and original video anime, including the five-part spinoff “Code Geass: Akito the Exiled,” shown in cinemas between 2012 and 2016.

In the following years, the franchise moved to the big screen with the recap trilogy “Code Geass – Hangyaku no Lelouch” (2017–2018) and with “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection” (2019). “Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture” then played in four parts in Japanese theaters between May and August 2024 and later streamed on Disney+ as 12 weekly episodes.

Beyond anime, the brand also pushed into other fronts. The crossover manga between Code Geass and Gundam Wing, “Shin Kidō Senki Gundam W x Code Geass – Hangyaku no Lelouch – Minuet Zero,” launched on Kadokawa’s KadoComi platform on July 10, with Kōjirō Taniguchi of Sunrise credited with the scenario. The 20th anniversary project also includes a new musical stage play, already staged in Osaka and Tokyo, and an exhibition that ran in Tokyo in September, opens in Osaka on November 6 and heads to Fukuoka on December 25. Details and updates can be followed on the official production website.

What to expect

With Nomura directing, Nozaki on scripts and Sunrise handling animation, “Code Geass: Star Chaser Aspal” bets on a historical setting new to the franchise — an alternate Roman Empire — while returning to the political tone and mecha that defined the brand. For fans, the next milestone is January 2027, when the first preview screenings should reveal more clearly how the new story connects to Lelouch’s legacy.
