Frances Neagley finally steps out of Jack Reacher's shadow. The spin-off Neagley premiered on September 16, 2026, with all eight first-season episodes released at once on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. The series follows the private investigator fans met in Reacher, now based in Chicago and forced to confront the suspicious death of a friend from her past — using everything she learned in the Army to find whoever is responsible.

Starring Maria Sten, the show is the first spin-off in the franchise based on Lee Child's novels and arrives with a clear vote of confidence from Amazon: less than three weeks after launch, Prime Video renewed it for a second season. According to the platform, the first batch reached 40 million viewers globally in its first 13 days and became the fourth most-watched series debut in the service's history. The title reinforces streaming's bet on action franchises, a move also visible in other series premieres in the catalog.

A supporting character who takes over her own case

Frances Neagley is no newcomer to Lee Child's universe. She appeared in the author's novels and came to life in Reacher, where she serves as the protagonist's trusted ally. A former member of the Army's 110th Special Investigations Unit, the character combines technical precision, physical capability and a sharp read of her surroundings that makes her especially effective in high-risk situations.

The difference now is the point of view. Instead of showing up to solve a problem and disappearing, Neagley has to sustain the investigation on her own, make decisions and deal with the emotional consequences of a case that hits her directly. The death of a close friend, initially treated as an accident, triggers a story that blends action, mystery and a dive into the investigator's past.

Moving a supporting player to the center of the narrative is precisely the project's main draw. The series was created by Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton, who also serve as executive producers and showrunners, with Lee Child among the executive producers alongside Don Granger, Sam Hill, Adam Higgs and Lisa Kussner. Sam Hill directed the first two episodes.

The case that reopens the investigator's past

In the story, Neagley works as a private investigator in Chicago after serving in the same military unit as Jack Reacher. When she learns that a beloved friend died in what is considered a suspicious accident, she decides to investigate on her own. Her Army experience provides the tools to face the case, but her closeness to the victim changes the nature of the work: finding the person responsible means revisiting a part of her own history that cannot be treated as just another job.

The production also uses the mystery to answer questions fans have carried since the character's first appearances. One of the most obvious is haphephobia, an intense fear of being touched, a defining trait of Neagley. In the spin-off, the condition gains an origin and context, tied to a childhood trauma that helps explain both the investigator's defensive posture and the way she moves through the world.

"Neagley is the little sister of Reacher in a way, and we want it to feel like a family, but I also think Neagley's different. Reacher is a silverback gorilla, and Neagley is a mountain lion, and the action also reflects that in how they're solving problems and getting into fights."

The actress adds that the debut season needed to create personal stakes for the protagonist, similar to what Reacher did in its first season with the hero's brother. "Personal in more ways than one for Neagley, because we all want to know what her backstory is and what this mystery that surrounds her is all about," Sten said.

Cast and the connection to the original series

Alongside Maria Sten, the ensemble includes Greyston Holt as Detective Hudson Riley, Adeline Rudolph as Renee Birdwhistle, Jasper Jones as Keno, Matthew Del Negro as Pierce Woodrow and Damon Herriman as Lawrence Cole. Alan Ritchson guest stars as Jack Reacher, keeping the bridge to the original show without turning the spin-off into a direct extension of it.

Reacher's presence is used sparingly. The goal is to follow the investigator and the space she now occupies in the franchise, not to repeat the formula of the male hero who arrives in a town, finds trouble and moves on. Neagley gains a fixed address, a professional routine and relationships of her own — including a romantic interest that runs into the character's difficulty with physical contact.

For longtime fans, the series expands a universe that has already proven profitable and connects with other action titles in the catalog, such as The Terminal List. For newcomers, the premise stands on its own: an experienced professional investigates a death that is too close for comfort and must decide how far she is willing to go to learn the truth. The first episode establishes the urgency; the following ones organize the search for answers.

Eight episodes at once and a record renewal

The release strategy was designed to create an event. All eight episodes arrived on Prime Video on the same day as the fourth-season finale of Reacher, on September 16, 2026. The choice allowed audiences to move from one series to the other without waiting and turned the spin-off into an immediate continuation of the conversation around the franchise.

The numbers released by Amazon help explain the quick renewal. The platform said the first season reached 40 million global viewers in 13 days, entered the top 10 most-watched seasons among original series and ranked as the fourth-best debut in the service's history. The second season was announced on October 1, 2026.

A universe in expansion

The spin-off arrives at a moment of expansion for the franchise. The fifth season of Reacher, based on the novel Make Me, was already in production during the launch of Neagley, and Amazon is preparing the character's first solo novelization: the book Zero Margin, written by Lee Child with Yasmin Angoe, is scheduled for March 2027.

If the first season works as an introduction, the second tends to consolidate Neagley as an investigator with an office, a team and cases of her own — a structure different from Reacher's nomadic life. The series has already shown it can sustain that model: in eight episodes, it builds a closed case, an emotional arc and a protagonist capable of carrying the franchise without depending on the constant presence of the character who introduced her.

For those who have not started yet, the entry point is the first episode. The friend's death provides the urgency, and Neagley's work organizes the search for answers. The question that sustains the season is what happens when someone trained to spot threats has to examine her own memories — and how far that investigation can go.

The official trailer sets the tone: lean action, an investigative atmosphere and the protagonist in direct confrontations.
