HBO cast Harry Gilby, Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn as Charlie, James and Lily; the series based on the first book is set to debut at Christmas 2026.

HBO has cast Harry Gilby as Charlie Weasley, Jasper Talbot as James Potter and Hannah Chinn as Lily Potter in its Harry Potter television series. The announcement, published October 27, 2026, adds three characters to the adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The series is scheduled to debut at Christmas 2026 on HBO and HBO Max where the service is available. Charlie, Ron’s older brother, will make his first on-screen appearance as a character in the franchise; James and Lily are Harry’s parents and remain central to the story’s backstory.
Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO announced the casting through official channels. Gilby will play Charlie, the Weasley brother known in the books for working with dragons in Romania. Talbot will portray James, and Chinn will play Lily. The casting does not change the already announced central trio: Dominic McLaughlin is Harry, Arabella Stanton is Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley.

Who are the new cast members?
Harry Gilby has been cast as Charlie Weasley, Ron’s older brother who works with dragons. In the books, Charlie is often mentioned by his family but does not take part directly in the central events of the first novel. The television adaptation could give room to characters and passages that received little screen time in the film versions. HBO has not said which episodes will feature Charlie or whether his role will extend beyond the first season.
Jasper Talbot will play James Potter, Harry’s father, and Hannah Chinn will portray Lily Potter, his mother. Both were killed by Voldemort before the main story begins, when Harry was still a baby. Their history is revealed to the young wizard gradually through conversations, memories and magical objects. The casting confirms that the characters will be portrayed on screen, but the announcement does not specify how much they will appear.
HBO described the casting post with the phrase “the magical family is growing.” The announcement also adds another Weasley to the series’ ensemble, although details of the script remain under wraps.
Charlie Weasley gets a first on-screen portrayal
Charlie is the second-oldest child of Arthur and Molly Weasley and the older brother of Bill, Percy, Fred, George, Ron and Ginny. In the novels, he chooses to study and care for dragons, a job that takes him to Romania. Although he is mentioned in the films and appears in a family photograph in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Charlie does not appear physically as a character in the movie adaptations. The series gives the character his first chance to take part in the story on screen.
His casting also broadens the Weasley family’s representation in the series. HBO had previously announced Katherine Parkinson as Molly, Tristan Harland as Fred, Gabriel Harland as George, Ruari Spooner as Percy and Gracie Cochrane as Ginny for season one. With Gilby, more members of the family are represented in the adaptation. HBO has not explained how their roles will be spread across the story or announced every character connected to the family.
James and Lily shape Harry’s story
James and Lily have a decisive presence even before Harry reaches Hogwarts. Their past is tied to the origin of Harry’s scar, the protection that saved him as a baby and the way Voldemort lost part of his power. The story reveals these details gradually, so the casting of Talbot and Chinn raises questions about how the production will balance present-day scenes with memories of the Potter family.
The announcement did not reveal costumes, characterization or specific scenes. It also did not confirm whether the actors’ involvement is limited to season one. The official Harry Potter website lists the three performers in their announced roles and updates the confirmed cast, but most adaptation details remain secret. Claims about unrevealed scenes or story changes should therefore be treated as speculation until HBO or the producers confirm them.
Series is scheduled for Christmas 2026
The first season adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the book that introduces Harry to the wizarding world and his first year at Hogwarts. The official synopsis describes the admission letter as the start of a life shaped by magic, friendship and adventure, alongside secrets the young wizard must face. The official Harry Potter website says the series will debut at Christmas 2026 on HBO and HBO Max in markets where the platform operates.
Francesca Gardiner writes and leads the first season as an executive producer. Mark Mylod will direct several episodes and executive produce for HBO, in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman are also executive producers. The casting of characters connected to the Potter and Weasley families expands the ensemble as the premiere approaches, but HBO has not announced a more specific release date.
